Penggemar kucing perlu tahu, ternyata ada cara ilmiah untuk mengelus si Mpus.
Penggemar kucing tentu merasa bahwa dirinya sudah cukup mengenal karakter kucing kesayangannya. Saya pun demikian, karena saya sudah mengasuh kucing sejak duduk di TK. Saya merasa bersyukur karena seluruh keluarga saya memang menyukai kucing, sehingga sewaktu di rumah ada 12 ekor kucing pun, tak ada yang mengeluh atau sebel. Kami juga bergantian memberi makan mereka: 3 kali sehari! (Padahal menurut dokter hewan, untuk kucing makan 2 kali sehari sudah cukup)
Kucing memang hewan yang sepertinya berkarakter manja, walaupun tak jarang perilakunya berubah-ubah sesuai suasana hatinya: sebentar ingin dimanja, dielus, digelitik perutnya, lalu tiba-tiba malah mencakar atau menggigit. Maunya apa sih, Pus?
Leluhurnya dari Afrika
Penelitian ilmiah ternyata memberi pandangan bahwa perubahan reaksi pada si Mpus lebih mungkin karena kita yang salah saat mengelusnya. Jadi nggak semua salah kucingnya, lho…! Menurut artikel yang ditulis oleh Finka untuk laman The Conversation, untuk memahami mengapa hal ini terjadi, kita perlu memahami dulu sejarah nenek moyang kucing. Kucing rumahan yang asal usulnya datang dari kucing liar Afrika ternyata awalnya punya tugas sebagai pengendali hama saja, bukan jadi companion manusia (lho, kok sekarang malah mereka malas-malasan untuk menangkap cicak, kecoa, atau tikus, ya? Menyalahi kodrat nih, Pus!)
Perubahan ini diperkirakan terjadi sekitar 4000 tahun yang lalu, setelah anjing rumahan diterima sebagai sahabat oleh manusia. Tapi, meskipun secara genetik dan hidup modern kucing berubah fungsi sebagai teman bagi manusia, namun di dalam otak mereka masih tetap ada insting sebagai kucing liar. Kucing liar umumnya hidup menyendiri dan tidak mudah untuk berhubungan atau berkomunikasi dengan pihak lain (melalui pesan visual maupun kimiawi, ya… dasarnya kucing emang curigaan, pilih-pilih, jadi ya… itu sudah kodratnya mereka, jangan disalahin kalo dia jutek sama kita ya….). Kucing memang tidak mewarisi keterampilan sosial yang kompleks dari leluhurnya.
Nah, sementara itu, manusia adalah makhluk sosial, yang senang menunjukkan rasa kasih sayang, punya empati (juga kepo, tentunya hehehe). Selain itu, Finka juga menambahkan kalau manusia mudah tertarik dengan figure-figur yang “unyu”, seperti mata belo, hidung mungil, juga wajah bulat. Itu sebabnya sebagian besar dari kita jatuh hati pada si Mpus. Ini analisis ilmiah lho… jadi reaksi kita yang sering gemas dan ingin mengelus, juga meng-“uyel-uyel” si mPus itu juga dorongan naluriah. Terbayang kan, ternyata naluri kita dan kucing berbeda? Kucing kerap mempersepsikan interaksi yang kita berikan padanya berlebihan, akhirnya dia merasa kesal dan memunculkan perlawanan diri; berupa cakaran dan gigitan.
Sangat pamrih
Memang sih, banyak kucing yang senang dielus, disayang-sayang, tetapi ternyata di balik itu, karakter manusianya juga penting. Kucing bisa tahu kita itu penyayang atau tidak. Kucing juga bisa tahu apakah manusianya paham bagian-bagian mana dari tubuhnya yang enak buat disentuh. Kalau kita tidak terbiasa mengurus kucing, sudah tentu kucing bisa merasakannya. Kucing juga bakal ogah dekat-dekat dengan kita, deh!
Nah, yang satu ini penting. Kucing itu binatang yang sangat pamrih. Meskipun sebagian kucing tidak senang disentuh, sebagian dari mereka bisa memberikan toleransi atas kedekatan sosial dengan manusia, ASAL… mendapat imbalan makanan atau rumah tinggal. Wah… kucing juga mengenal “there is no free coffee” rupanya… Sialan! Jadi, si mPus yang tinggal bersama kita tidak selamanya berarti dia kucing yang bahagia… tapi lebih tepat disebut sebagai kucing yang TOLERAN.
JADI GIMANA CARANYA MENGELUS SI MPUS?
Kucing senang dielus kalau:
- Ekornya terangkat tinggi dan mau memulai kontak dengan kita (DIA YANG MULAI YA… BUKAN KITA. HUH!)
- Mengeluarkan suara dengkuran (purring) dan melakukan gerakan memijat dengan kaki depannya (kneading).
- Ekornya bergerak dari kiri ke kanan saat terangkat.
- Ekspresinya relaks (eh, kucing juga punya ekspresi lho…), kupingnya menghadap ke depan.
- Dia menyenggolkan kepalanya sedikit ke tangan saat kita elus.
Dia sebel kalau:
- Melengos (ih, judes…)
- Diam, tidak ada suara purring atau gerakan kneading.
